Hi again,
I see there are two projects in the trac page of Global South team[1]:
* Tor Relay Campaign in Latin America * Global South Tor Trainer Support
There isn't much information of the status of those projects. What actions are being taking for the Tor Relay Campaign? Where do you need help?
Best,
Rafael

Hi
Rafael,
Welcome to the list!
Sorry that the wiki isn't updated -- that's my fault! I can give you a brief update on the projects here, and maybe some others on this list can help:
- - Tor Relay Campaign in Latin America
ilv is working on this directly, so I'll let him give an update. But in addition to this campaign, a number of people have been holding Tor meetups for users and relay operators in LATAM, so that's another way that relay operation has been encouraged in the region.
- - Global South Tor trainer support
This project is a little less active now. We had a small amount of funding for supporting Tor outreach work in LATAM, and we gave it out to different trainers on an as-need basis. That's still happening somewhat, but it expanded into us looking for a funder to make this an even bigger effort. Ideally we'd like to be able to support many Tor trainings/meetups and fund the associated costs like travel and resources.
Other things that are happening: - - hiring a community liaison to do some of the outreach work listed abov e - - holding the first Tor Meeting in LATAM (Mexico City Sept-Oct 2018) - - usability/outreach work in LATAM and East Africa - - making more connections with Tor people in the Global South and bringing them to the Tor Meeting
Anyone else want to chime in with what I'm missing?
Alison

You're not *missing* it, but I'm wondering about determining two or three annual events like open source cons in LATAM that the TPO could focus on, meaning:
* have a table with swag
* submit presentations
* have a relay ops meeting as a BoF
* make sure there's a decent number of people attending from TPO, even if it means dealing with travel costs
Starting a consistent presence at some events matters... since those you see annually gives us credibility.
As a side note, maintaining relay/bridge reports specifically on LATAM might be useful. I don't mean just run them yourself, but maybe have them send automatically monthly to global-south@. Let's make LATAM nodes part of the landscape.

The Latin American Free Software Festival (FLISOL) would be on April 28. It is not actually a conference, but hundreds of conferences distributed all over Latin America in 20 countries.[1] This has been happening in a very distributed way every year since 2005.
I think that a simple thing like a blog post in the Tor blog that: *Congratulates the Free Software community in Latin America for the promoting of freedom in the digital era for 14 consecutive years. *Encourage people to promote and teach Tor and other privacy tools during the event. *Ask people who are going to talk about Tor to let the Tor Project know about them. *Invite those who are promoting Tor to this mailing list, and it would be nice to have a tor-talk-es@ and tor-talk-pt@ mailing list and invite people to join.
This is a nice importunity that happens one time in the year. It would help the Free Software community learn about Tor and it would also help Tor to learn about people who are actually promoting Tor, but are not close to the project.
What do you think? I would be more than happy to come up with a draft.
Best regards,
Rafael

Thanks Rafael, I think this is a good idea. There was also the suggestion of doing a blog post about a new mailing list in spanish in [0]. We could actually do both things together. After Vasilis mail on this same mailing list one or two weeks ago I contacted the people of Flisol Santiago to see when and where it would happen this year. Due to time constraints I am not sure I could prepare something for this year's Flisol but sure I can try. Anyway, I like the idea.

Thanks for the interest.
I am involved in the first one. It is not actually a tor relay campaingper se but it can be seen that way. We (Derechos Digitales) have been coordinating with local organizations and people in a set of countries in Latin America to promote privacy and anonymity online by helping to enhance the Tor network. For this there are two main tasks considered:
2) Mapping of legal aspects related to the operation of exit relays and the use of the Tor network. This is being coordinated with local lawyers with experience in this matters.
1) Setup of new exit relays. This should be done with the help of technical people in place.
The set of countries so far include Mexico, Argentina and Costa Rica. We just contacted someone in Nicaragua to help us find organizations interested in this. If you think we can do this in Ecuador, please contact me so we can talk :)
Together with this we've been (and would be) working in techincal and non-technical documentation in Spanish, including graphical material as well.
We hope to release a draft of the mapping and a first version of the documentation by the end of this month/beginning of the next.
That is all I can summarize for now. Hope it answers your question, and again if you are interested in doing this in Ecuador let's talk.
