Is there any way from TorBrowser to verify that I'm indeed using the .onion address? Or is part of the point being that it's undetectable from the client?
currently it is not directly shown in the UI, I made a feature request/comment to change that, let's see what their UI plans are: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/27590#comment:2
