Hi,
GitLab recently introduced a maximum lifetime for *all* access
tokens. The change is discussed in a [blog post][1] from last
October. Most importantly:
> As of the 16.0 milestone (May 2023), we applied an expiration date of
> May 14, 2024, to any personal, group, or project access token that
> previously didn't have one.
We first noticed this issue in [January][2] and have looked at
mitigations, but ultimately, there's no good workaround short of
"service accounts" which is some Open Core thing they are pushing onto
us. There's some work upstream to make it easier to rotate tokens (which
make the entire security measure moot in the first place, fun).
So anyways. Your things might break now. And when you recreate the
tokens, they will still have an upper time limit (one year, IIRC), so
you will need to fix this again and again.
I'm sorry. Further discussion in [2]. For now our approach is wait and
see what gitlab.com is going to do, because this is breaking a *lot* of
things in a lot of places, and I can't imagine they will just let the
thing burn for that long. The actual recommended workaround from
upstream now is to have a *pair* of tokens that renew each other but we
have found that to be really impractical.
So for now, we're just trying to document the tokens we have and how to
refresh them, as an immediate mitigation. I encourage you to pay
attention to the "your token has expired" notification as well.
Good luck!

== Discussion ==
* what to do with moat bridges once we turn off BridgeDB?
* The plan is to switch off BridgeDB on 2024-09-09.
* Currently, moat bridges are reserved exclusively for moat. When rdsys stops distributing moat bridges, those bridges will get no new users. They will only have the users that already knew about them. (The "request bridge" button in Tor Browser uses moat, after the switch the button will get bridges from circumvention settings instead.)
* meskio will configure rdsys so new bridges are not assigned to that distributor
* meskio will monitor the usage of moat bridges to decide when to move them somewhere
* During the transition period, the request bridge button will display a captcha (because Tor Browser is expecting one), but it will be a placeholder captcha: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/anti-censorship/rdsys/-/issues/182https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/anti-censorship/rdsys/-/blob/617c6ced3900…

Question: What makes a bridge usable for a given user, and how can we encode that to best ensure we're getting the most appropriate resources to people?
1. Are there some obvious grouping strategies that we can already consider?
e.g., by PT, by bandwidth (lower bandwidth bridges sacrificed to open-invitation buckets?), by locale (to be matched with a requesting user's geoip or something?)
2. Does it make sense to group 3 bridges/bucket, so trusted users have access to 3 bridges (and untrusted users have access to 1)? More? Less?

Hello everyone!
This is the user support report for the month of July.
We saw another uptick in tickets from Chinese speaking users which can be
attributed to the amazing outreach work[0]!
Most of my work last month consisted of helping users in regions where Tor
is censored which usually involves helping with instructions on how to
use bridges, snowflake and other censorship circumvention methods, accessing
Tor mirror sites, using GetTor as an alternative way to fetch Tor Browser
binaries and general troubleshooting.
As an interesting fact, July also saw more tickets coming in from email
than Telegram! :)
# Frontdesk (email support channel)
* 546(↓) RT tickets created
* 602(↑) RT tickets resolved
Tickets by numbers:
1. 343(↑) RT tickets: private bridge requests from Chinese speaking
users.
2. 139(↑) RT tickets: circumventing censorship in Russian
speaking countries.
3. 4(↑) RT tickets: Circumventing censorship with
Tor in Farsi.
4. 4 RT tickets: Reports of websites blocking Tor.

Priorities in the Censorship Circumvention Landscape" on Aug 22, 2024
* Questions to ask and goals to have:
* What aspects of the paper are questionable?
* Are there immediate actions we can take based on this work?
* Are there long-term actions we can take based on this work?
* Is there future work that we want to call out in hopes
that others will pick it up?

Next week:

Later:
- begin implementing some preliminary user feedback mechanism
to identify bridge blocking based on Vecna's work
- improve metrics collection/think about how to show Lox is
working/valuable
- sketch out Lox blog post/usage notes for forum
(long term things were discussed at the meeting!):
https://pad.riseup.net/p/tor-ac-community-azaleas-room-keep
- brainstorming grouping strategies for Lox buckets (of
bridges) and gathering context on how types of bridges are
distributed/use in practice
Question: What makes a bridge usable for a given user, and
how can we encode that to best ensure we're getting the most appropriate
resources to people?
1. Are there some obvious grouping strategies that we
can already consider?
e.g., by PT, by bandwidth (lower bandwidth bridges
sacrificed to open-invitation buckets?), by locale (to be matched with a
requesting user's geoip or something?)
2. Does it make sense to group 3 bridges/bucket, so
trusted users have access to 3 bridges (and untrusted users have access
to 1)? More? Less?

Hello! Below is my July’24 report!
In July, I resolved 587 tickets:
On Telegram (@TorProjectSupportBot) - 427
On RT (frontdesk@tpo) - 145
On WhatsApp (+447421000612) - 13
and on Signal (+17787431312) - 2.
My main focus is to help Russian-speaking users get access to Tor. To do
that I:
1. Share bridges and instructions.
2. Collect feedback.
3. Help with troubleshooting.
4. Monitor censorship events in the Central Asiacountries [1].
The increased internet censorship in Russia, in particular, the
throttling of YouTube [2], led to an increase in the number of tickets
at the end of the month.
I continue to collect information on the bug with Tor Browser for
Android (TBA) not working on Samsung devices [3].
In July'2024, Apple fulfilled the Roskomnadzor request to ban some VPN
apps from the AppStore[4]. To prepare for their further actions, I
checked the alternative ways to get and install Tor Browser for Android
using F-Droid. I wrote updated instructions on how to do that. That
helped to find an issue with Tor Browser for Android marked as an
"anti-feature" app on the F-Droid app catalog[5] and how this make
censored users life more difficult to get TBA. Also, I checked the
sideloading options for iOS and Onion Browser, which are very difficult
for regular users to follow.
Also, I continue to reviewRussian translationsin weblate, which often
helps to improve our user documentation[6].
