Hi,
we're going to package sbws [0] for Debian. We would like to provide the package in deb.torproject.org and probably also in the official Debian archive. teor, irl [1] and others [2] proposed to used the "tor-" namespace for the sbws package. Ulrike pointed out [2] that software using "tor-" in their name needs to be acknowledged by the Tor Project [3]. So, would it be fine to call the sbws Debian package something like "tor-sbws"?.

Hi juga. Namespaces are useful if there's multiple packages. A namespace of one seems odd. In most places Stem's package is called 'stem' but in Debian and Fedora it's called python-stem because that's how those platforms like to namespace it.
Are you proposing that we call everything tor related 'tor-[name]'? Would you mind explaining further why we're adding this prefix?

So, no, not all packages need the tor- prefix, but because "sbws" is a simple, short name they're future-proofing against a collision.

Unfortunately, I don't think sbws is actually similar. Maybe using "tor-arm" instead of "arm" was an example/precedent, but I don't know the history there.

The suggestion was also to help users by adding tor-. A package called "Simple Bandwidth Scanner" may easily be confused with a speed test application.
The name is not very descriptive, adding tor- makes it more descriptive.
It doesn't need to be tor- specifically though. It could equally be onion- or or-. Something that makes it clear that this tool is not for bandwidth measurement in general.

Having the word 'tor' in the short description and/or the long description is where it matters. I don't think there is any reason to add 'tor-' in front of 'sbws' if the description details that it is for the tor network.

In the end it is ftp-master that decides this. If there is someone who will sponsor the package upload and it's not rejected by ftp-master, then there is really no problem here.
