Tor exits on National Research and Education Networks (NRENs)

Hi All! At dotsrc.org we are trying to run Tor exits on the Danish NREN, just like 'Digital Society' does in Switzerland <https://metrics.torproject.org/rs.html#search/as:AS559>, and 'Heart for Internetfreedom' does in the Netherlands <https://metrics.torproject.org/rs.html#search/flag:exit%20as:1101>. We have been running two Tor exit nodes for a couple of months, and we've just been asked to shut them down by our ISP DeiC (AS1835) who runs the Danish research network "Forskningsnettet". Their reasoning for banning Tor exits is that other European universities don't expect bad traffic from "Forskningsnettet". We're currently working with DeiC to find a solution. We would prefer if they could just change the abuse contact for our IP range to tor-abuse(a)dotsrc.org, but they are pushing for us getting our own AS number. Anybody with experience running a Tor exit on a NREN? If you have a contact person at a NREN, maybe you could ask why they decided to allow Tor exit traffic. That answer would be helpful in our discussions with DeiC. Are there any other organizations running Tor exits on the European NRENs than the two we mentioned? Thanks! Research topic / justification

I'm pursuing the idea of getting a tor exit node set up at my university, though in exploring it further it definitely seems the way to do it is to link it to some relevant research. Wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to go about deciding on a topic that requires relatively little overhead but is considered valuable enough to justify setting up an exit node, and one that's not running at a trivial level of, say, 512kbps. Also any ideas on how to add a bit more permanence to this? I'm around for the next several months, but gone after that, and would like to be able to pass it on to someone else to maintain if I'm to go through the effort to set it up. Cheers, Alex

new relay online at Western U

Hello Just a quick note to let you folks know we recently brought our non-exit relay online, ellenatfims, and it has been a big hit with our MLIS (library science) grad students. Our relay is hosted in the Graduate Resource Centre Library in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at Western University. I would be happy answer any questions. I'm working with a small group over at RIT that's starting to get some things together to do research on/for the TOR project for the purpose of understanding how it works better and (in the long run) doing work on trying to both find weaknesses and contribute positively to the operation of the project. Seeing as how we're just getting off the ground now, our goal is first to build an isolated TOR network that we can do our work on. Looking to chat with University Tor operators

Hi All, I'm currently working on formulating a best-practices and how-to document for running Tor nodes in University and other academic settings. My primary focus is on running production Tor nodes, but I'm also happy to hear about research uses of Tor. I'd love to chat with anyone involved with the day-to-day operation of Tor nodes on University networks as well as anyone involved with the process of standing up Tor nodes on University networks and any administrative overhead that involved. I'm happy to chat via phone or email. If you're currently operating a University-based Tor node and are interested in sharing some of your experiences, let me know. Some potential questions I'd be curious to hear about include: + Why do you operate a Tor node? For research? As a public service? For student experience? + What's the governance/organizational structure for your nodes? Who's in charge of their operation? + Who handles the day-to-day operation of the nodes? Run by campus IT? Run by a dept? Run by students? Etc? + Who handles complaints? + Was it difficult to convince university administration/legal/IT to support the deployment of Tor nodes? What were their concerns? + How many and what kind of complaints do you receive? + What kinds of costs are associated with the operation of your node and how are these justified/budgeted? + What exit policy do you use? + How are the nodes placed within the campus network? Outside the firewall/IDS? On their own public subnet? How do you handle isolation of reputational issues? Looking for operators on French campus

Hello, Before going further in the process of setting up a Tor relay in my university, the administration asked if there is other French universities hosting relays (middle or exit). I looked at the Renater ASN (2200) on Compass, but it seems that there is no nodes on it. If someone has experience in running a relay on a French campus (in a public or private school), please let me know.
