"The board members of the association are not considered suspects but witnesses in the ongoing investigation."
"Just to recap: The mere presence of an e-mail address at a large free provider on a website has caused law enforcement authorities to deduce that a German association that helps raise funds for this provider must be connected to this website somehow."

I'm not at all surprised that this particular set of incidents happened in Bavaria, because it is known to be one of the (if not *the*) states in Germany where politicians and authorities with a hardon for what they consider "necessary security measures" are most prolific; see recent changes in this Bavaria's police law hammered through by the CSU against all protests and concerns, the CSU morons' disruptions of the German coalition government, etc. pp.
Good luck to everybody at Zwiebelfreunde, their families and whoever else has been harassed.

I feel sorry for these guys.
I hope they had backups off shore as they probably won't see their stuff returned for some time or at all as investigations can take years.
If they need funds for legal support I'll chip in if they require it.

Let's not mince words, Bavaria has become a police state and I don't mean this as any kind of exaggeration, I've read the new law - a lot of people are (in my opinion, rightly) worried that it portends the end of the rule of law throughout Germany, not just Bavaria, as interior ministers and right-wing populists (those who take a tough stance - on civil rights and especially the rights of minorities, that is) are colluding to get similar laws passed in many of the other 15 states, too.
Now it appears that the far-right local ruling party (CSU) and their supporters inside the police force are openly using the new powers for political aims, namely in support of fascists (AfD). (In case anyone would like to challenge this categorization as fascist btw, I have made up my mind, the evidence is strong - just listen to Jens Maier, Bernd Höcke, or indeed Gauland himself and see for yourself if this squares with e.g. Umberto Eco's definition). I've had too many disturbing conversations with people defending them - now look what happens when the far right becomes the new center.
In related news, there was certainly no police brutality during the totally peaceful summit of the totally peaceful and constructive G20 leaders which was overshadowed by totally shocking and unexpected protests.
Good luck everyone. This is no longer the country I grew up in.

They seized most of our electronical storage equipment (disks,
laptops, PCs, GnuPG Smartcards/Yubikeys), but it is safe to assume that they will not be able to break the encryption (or the smartcards). They also took our mobile phones, but even if they were to break into them, no login data or anything else affecting our infrastructure or communications is stored on those phones.
Apart from encrypted media, they had the legal right to seize
documents related to our Riseup bank account starting from January 2018. They also went and got those from our bank, the GLS Gemeinschaftsbank. However, we have to keep records and receipts of all expenditures for tax reasons. These documents were “safely” kept in a secure fire-proof safe.
Despite our protests, they additionally seized all printed documents
relating to our own and partner projects since the inception of the association in 2011.
This includes highly sensitive personal data of donors, identities of
activists that received reimbursements or payments, and a list of our members.
If you have ever donated to Torservers, or Tails or Riseup via a
European bank transaction, your data is very likely now in the hands of the German police. (IBAN account number, name of account holder, amount and date)
Witnesses? Seriously, witnesses? Seems a bit extreme for "witnesses".
