Since 2014 I have run a non-exit relay at my premises. However ultimo July the system load increased abruptly. Idle-cpu -typically 60-70% - dropped to 30%, _and_ with frequent drops to 0!
I reduced the max bandwidth to 1.2 Mbytes. That reduces the load somewhat but still with frequent spikes where the idle-cpu hits 0 and I get the "relay too slow" indication.
Any suggestions?

This happens to my relay as well. There are various posts on this list about it. I've stopped tuning the maxadvertised bandwitdth and now I just ride it out.
Iirc it's normally accompanied with a large spike in incoming connections and some dropped onionskins.
There are some links to Toralfs scripts in previous posts which include some firewall tooling which might help. I've yet to try it out.
Thanks.
