Tor blog - first steps

Hey everyone, I’m new to the Tor community (Hi!) but I’ve had some relative success with migrating Drupal blogs to other formats. As the debate around which static site generator starts up, I figure that I could help with just moving the old posts out into usable HTML chunks (re this). Could andrew/lunar point me where to get a snapshot of the database and code for the blog? Thanks! -ultrasandwich

Suggestions for Mirrors in Censored Countries

Hi everyone, We've been continuing our work on the download site (current version: https://wpapper.github.io/tor-download-web/ ). We're now looking for suggestions on providing downloads for censored countries. Currently, we have a few ideas for making downloads accessible in censored countries: 1. Host the downloads directly on each mirror While this would work, the combined size of all of the files is greater than GitHub's 1GB limit per repository. This means that we'd need to setup a script to pull from the mirror, setup a cron job to update the files, cull unnecessary files, etc. This solution gets complex very quickly, so it's not ideal. 2. Use an external download mirror that is not torproject.org Could we use something like Amazon S3 or Sourceforge? It's possible, but then we're just relying on another single point of failure. This isn't ideal, and it would be better if the downloads were distributed. 3. Provide torrents to users in censored countries This seems much more difficult to block, which is good. I couldn't find any official TBB torrents, though. 4. Assume that the user is not living in a censored country We could always assume that torproject.org is accessible, but we don't want to make censored users unable to use the mirror. Does anyone have any comments? Any other proposed solutions? Thanks for your help. Sincerely, Will Papper

I created a GitHub repository for the project here (attempting to keep the same naming convention as the official projects): https://github.com/wpapper/tor-download-web It's just a quick and easy way for us to collaborate for now. Ideally, I'd like to have it hosted on https://gitweb.torproject.org/, but I'm not sure what the policies are for adding a project. Could one of the Tor Project members shed some light on this? Redesign the sponsor page

Hello www-team, Would anyone like the fame and fortune of redesigning the current Sponsors page? We have an open ticket, https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/10013 to redesign the page to make it easier to see who is funding us, how much they funded us over time, and generally make the entire page more reader friendly? Just a download site

Imagining just a download site. How would you imagine a simpler Tor site to look and work if it was just for downloading tor browser? The goal is to make it super simple and as few clicks as possible to hit the index page, and download tor browser in your language. The docs and all that could be linked to the current site. Hello! Thank you for your work in providing me this software. I believe the free exchange of ideas and information leads to a better society. Your work to toward this by providing an uncensored internet is very much appreciated. I've added my name to your Tor volunteer list but I'm unsure whether I can be of help. I am a procedure writer and have worked with computers since early onset, ( pre-MS Windows). Despite this, I characterize myself as a computer illiterate, or at least nearly so. Unfortunately, I'm one of the go to guys in my work group. This brings me to my request for help. I like your new opening menu attached below. However, I am unsure how to answer either of the two questions without more help. I understand why they are being asked, but the information for answering them is not part of my immediate knowledge base. I've been reading that my browsing experience using Tor may be restricted by my provider, Comcast, but I've not seen evidence of this, so far. Q1 I'm not sure what obstacles are. Could you provide a link here cutting to a description of obstacles with examples or method for determining their existence? Q2 As to filters I don't know. Censored, I don't know. Proxied. I don't know. A link to a page describing each with examples of where to look or how to determine this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you sincerely

Starting this thread to discuss the different solutions, what they offer and how many people have used them before. I know Drupal better than other CMSs and it fits the requirements although static generation is not out of the box but supported by a module(like most things in Drupal). Content is usually created and modified through a web interface that offers either source code view or a WYSIWYG GUI but can be template based using text files on disk. Can anyone explain a bit how Jekyll would work in the context of the Tor website? Do users need to create the content on disk or through a web interface?

Graphic Design thoughts

Hello, community. I should first introduce myself to this list. I'm a semi-long time exit relay operator. Although I'm still a newcomer, I have a few years of graphics design experience, I'm good with Linux systems and decent with servers, I do a bit of web development and design, and I'm currently learning Javascript. In addition, I can be useful when it comes to writing. Although I have a lot on my plate at the moment, I'm a big fan of the Tor project and I'm willing to help out wherever I can (whenever I can). I have a total of 1 (one!) website, which is a Tor exit relay notice site (http://68.118.171.187/) that I've put way too much work into, since it's the only thing that I can work on as far as websites go. I thought I'd offer some input into this discussion. As has been said before, we really should get a style guide going before we design any actual branding, logos, etc. I'm not too sure about where we're at in this undertaking, but has anybody tried reaching out to the EFF about this? They have a knack for good design, and they've done artwork for Tor before. They're never reluctant to help out the Tor project. Maybe they can help with this. Just an idea. Now, in complete disregard for what I just said, I'd like to talk a bit about the logo. This is, I think, the most important part of our project's presentation. Once the style guide is finished, it should be one of the first things to (re-)design. Marck Al's visual identity mockup is a start. Thanks for putting in some work, Marck. The onion layers concept is something I'd like to see be kept in the new logo. It's an homage to the design of Tor itself. I like the 'O' design. In a way, it gives an impression of the layers of an onion (which is the goal of this design, of course). It's alright, but it would be better to give more emphasis on the concept of layers. Perhaps add more 'layers' to the 'O' and make them less thick? I also like the way the layers get darker as they move outward, once again in homage to the way Tor itself is designed (more and more layers of encryption added as data moves through the circuit). As noted in a post to the Tor subreddit (https://pay.reddit.com/r/TOR/comments/1vvren/green_a_good_colour_for_tor/), the rest of the logo is a bit generic. It's a bit corporate-looking as well. I prefer the rounded corners of the original logo's typeface; it gives off a more friendly vibe. As a sidenode, getting more involved with the subreddit about the redesign is a great way to get some discussion going and opinions formed. I'm not much for designing from scratch, but I've attached a little something that I threw together which replaces the middle onion symbol with Marck's 'O' symbol. We haven't yet decided upon the new color palette, but I've colored it a nice earthy blue color (blue chill to be exact) for now. Inkscape SVG and regular PNG versions are attached. Don't be too hard on it. It's just a rough mockup. :) Hope this wasn't too long of a message. Interested in your feedback. Regards, Robert

Here's a couple of tasks you could pick if you wish to move things forward regarding Tor website: Create a sitemap for the current torproject.org website ------------------------------------------------------- It would be great to have a better idea of what the website already contains. An inventory of what is already there, which personas it would interest, what ought to be split, recycled or simply thrown away would be really useful to think about the organization of the new website. If you wonder where to put the result, it can be done directly on the relevant ticket: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/10591 or on a dedicated wiki page, waiting to existing: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/Website/OldSitemap Experiment using some static website generators ----------------------------------------------- The wiki page currently list three static website generators, namely Pelican, Jekyll and Middleman. https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/wiki/Website#Engine It would truly help if some folks could start experimenting with them so we get a better feeling of how much they could be fit for the Tor Project's website or not. As content, feel free to convert the some of the current WML website https://svn.torproject.org/svn/website/trunk or to use some of what ultrasandwidth has scrapped from blog.tpo: https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/10479 Design a new navigation system ------------------------------ The navigation on the current Tor website has been said to be confusing. There is the top-level bar, then the strange “Download, Volunteer, Donate” buttons, and the second or third level navigation on the left… I think we could start brainstorming around some design drafts on how this could be made better.
