It should be framed as something informal like "chip in? constant development to stay ahead of censors" It should be directly to the payment aparatus rather than ten levels of cleverness.
A suggestion is to prominently put a donate button and link to the donate page of torproject.org.
If every downloader donated $1, we'd sustainable on our own for a long, long time.
